La Porte City Public Library Board of Trustees consists of six members. Members are appointed to six-year terms. One member must reside in rural Black Hawk County, four members must reside within city limits, and one member may reside within city limits or rural Black Hawk County. All members are appointed by the mayor, and the rural member is approved by the County Board of Supervisors. Among themselves, the Board will elect a president and secretary.
The Board controls fiduciary affairs for the library, including the hiring of a Library Director, who is responsible for all other operations of the library. The Board maintains their own bylaws, which are governed by City of La Porte City Code 390, Chapter 22 and Iowa Code 392.5.
